PRIDE'S PERIL

ree

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18

🔎Reflection: Pride is not merely an over-inflated sense of self-importance; it is a sin that leads to catastrophe and destruction. As Proverbs 16:18 teaches, pride precedes a fall—it's the truth of God’s created universe, woven into the very fabric of reality. In Numbers 16, Scripture reveals that Korah's pride led him to rebel against God’s appointed leadership, Moses and Aaron. Korah was an insider, not an enemy of Israel, but his pride blinded him to the truth that he was rejecting God’s design for Israel.

“He has performed mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.” -Luke 1:51-52

When pride takes root, as it did with Korah, people act as though God’s plan needs their assistance rather than their allegiance and acquiescence to succeed. Instead of submitting to God's will, pride drives us to seize what is not ours, and it leads to self-destruction. This was true for Satan... Korah… Judas… and remains true today. Pride is not merely a harmless or inflated sense of self-worth; it is one’s sinful rejection of God’s sovereign rule over -all- things.

🤺Action: Take time today to pray that the LORD would graciously illuminate areas of your life where pride may be hindering your obedience to God. It might be in your relationships, ministry, personal ambitions, or all the above. Consider how pride may subtly distort your motives. Look back at who you were in your flesh; then choose to humble yourself before the LORD in repentance and submission. Scripture reveals that it is better to be lowly in spirit and aligned with God’s will than to exalt yourself.

🙏Prayer: Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that You ordained Your eternal Son, Jesus, as Sovereign LORD over -ALL- things. Expose any pride in my heart and give me the courage and humility to ask You for forgiveness and repent. LORD Jesus, You showed the ultimate humility, submitting to the Father’s will even unto death on a cross. Holy Spirit, convict me where pride has taken root and is leading me astray. Give me a heart, like David's, that is quick to recognize and repent. God Almighty, empower me to walk in humility for Your honor and glory. Amen.
